The Importance of Shooting with Dual Card Slots, Brittney and Caleb

Happy Friday, friends!! I’m pumped to start a new series on our blog today for photographers!
It’s been on my heart to start sharing and teaching tips and tricks to people wanting to wholeheartedly pursue photography! A little over 5 years ago, I started my business as a high schooler and it’s been a crazy ride of learning + growing ever since! This business is such a joy and an absolute blessing from the Lord, but it’s not easy! Over the years I have spent many late nights and long days in the office hustling to build a business that would best serve my clients for years to come! So today I am thrilled to share one HUGE tip that has brought so much peace of mind in my business, shooting with dual card slots!

As a wedding photographer, you hold a huge responsibility of capturing a once in a lifetime day and there are no re-dos! If you have have a memory card corrupt, the chances of getting the images back is slim! Caleb and I shoot with Canon 5D Mark IIIs and a 5D Mark IV. Both of these camera bodies allow you to shoot with a Compact Flash (CF) card and a Secure Digital (SD) card. This is such an amazing feature because you can record to both cards at the same time and have a consistent back up of your images! I highly recommend anyone going into the photography industry to get camera bodies with this feature!

Caleb and I love shooting with our SanDisk Extreme PRO cards!
We buy them off Amazon or B&H.

STEP 3: Select your playback folder

I personally prefer to have this set to the SD card option. On a wedding day I do not switch out my SD card, so this enables me to easily view everything I have photographed on the camera that day.

STEP 4: Go to the Record Menu (red), section 1 and select “Image Quality”
In this section you can set what type of images you want recorded to each memory card slot. I prefer to shoot RAW on both the CF and SD cards. It’s totally a personal preference, but I feel so much more comfortable at the end of a wedding day knowing that if either of my cards corrupted I would be totally fine! I know a lot of photographers that shoot RAW on one card and JPEG on the other and have not had any issues! Choose what makes you the most comfortable!
